Overview

Driving regeneration,
through responsible growth

At Kopanang we have readily adopted the concept and embedded the reality of sustainability into our business model. All our activities are currently focused on regenerating businesses which have been winding down for a number of years, and we recognise the consequent potential adverse impacts on employees, their families and communities.

Implicit in the regeneration of the business is a turnaround strategy which has three distinct components:

Reviving Operations, Restoring Communities

Recapitalisation

Accelerated development

Sustainable Growth

By breathing new life and capital into our operations, we are able to rapidly develop new mining areas which will fuel sustainable growth for our all our stakeholders, while generating the funds to contribute to the rebuilding and development of communities.

Health and Wellness in the Workplace

Health & Wellness as a Core Part of Responsible Mining

Promoting a Healthy and Productive Workforce

Underground mining in South African gold fields presents a number of occupational health challenges for management and employees. Exposure to dust, silica and noise are serious workplace hazards, and may result in occupational lung disease such as silicosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and noise-induced hearing loss.

Over the years the South African gold industry, along with important stakeholders, has developed responses to these hazards. The Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996, in seeking to promote a culture of health and safety in the industry, regulates the duties of employers and employees in identifying hazards and eliminating, controlling, and minimising health and safety risks.

At Kopanang employees have access to a medical station that provides primary health care and emergency stabilisation services on-site. Primary health care includes the provision of acute and chronic medication, including, that of HIV/Aids and TB.

Employees also have access to secondary health services through specialists and private hospitals. Most procedures are performed at the Life Anncron Hospital, in Klerksdorp.

Emergency services provide a 24/7 ambulance coverage to Kopanang, along with on-site paramedic care.

Occupational healthcare services - including heat tolerance screening, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy - are performed by Laboransan Incorporated at their facility in Klerksdorp.

Prioritising Wellness Across Our Operations

Kopanang acknowledges that wellness is more than just a trend—it's a vital component of a healthy, productive, and sustainable work environment. As businesses evolve, there is a growing recognition that employee well-being directly impacts performance, morale, and overall company success.

Kopanang feels that focus on wellness in the workplace helps reduce stress, prevents burnout, and lowers absenteeism. When employees feel supported physically, mentally, and emotionally, they are more likely to stay engaged, creative, and committed to their roles.

Moreover, promoting wellness enhances teamwork and communication. A healthy work environment fosters mutual respect and a sense of belonging, which in turn helps with safety and production in the workplace.

Kopanang have implemented a few simple initiatives such as mental health support, a Dietician and Biokineticist and Fitness programs. We will strive to continue investing in workplace wellness as it isn’t just beneficial for our employees – it’s a smart strategy.

When people feel good, they work better. And when companies prioritize well-being, everyone wins.

Safety in the Workplace

Safety: Everyone, Everywhere, Every Shift

Underground mining activities present hazards and risks which are specific to the mining industry. Kopanang’s safety structures include rigorously applied safety procedures, standards and training to protect people from harm in working areas. This could be the result of seismic activity and accidents involving machinery and equipment, amongst other causes.

At Kopanang we strive to create workplaces where people can work without being injured or harmed in any way, and we promote a culture of safety which relies on:

  • technology and innovation

  • hazard and risk identification and assessment

  • identifying and eliminating safety threats

  • using both motivation and discipline to ensure compliance

  • we monitor our safety performance and report our performance transparently and comprehensively.

To show the dedication towards safety in our workplace Kopanang achieved 1MFFS on 30 January 2025.

Environmental Stewardship in a Changing World

In recent years there has been increasing competition for access to water, land and other resources. Environmental custodianship and management are significant, integral parts of our sustainable development initiatives. Our responsibility in this area has grown in line with this reality, and also in response to the sophisticated South African environmental legislation regime. The rigorous application of environmental laws and regulations focuses largely on:

responsible and efficient water and energy management

reducing emissions which have an adverse effect on air quality

biodiversity management

Empowering the Communities Around Us

Creating Shared Value Beyond the Mine

Kopanang is conscious of the important role that host, and neighbouring communities play at our operations and in terms of the business. It is a fundamental principle at Kopanang that our operation and the activities associated with operating our mine should have a net positive effect on this critical body of stakeholders.

To this end, we foster constructive and co-operative engagement with communities. Given that these communities

are frequently situated outside the urban reach, low levels of education, employment and income are prevalent. Mining companies are often the only major employers in these areas.

Through our engagement processes, we have identified that the provision of infrastructure and support for educational facilities are among the most pressing needs in our neighbouring communities.

Our People

Human Capital at the Heart of Sustainable Growth

Sustainability Page 4

The respect we have for human capital manifests in the way we treat our people and shapes the methods we use to protect our natural and manufactured capital.

Throughout our business, we are committed to protecting people from danger and removing them from high-risk situations, while we work towards ensuring the sustainability and stability of our operation. Our challenges are most acute in areas where there are high levels of poverty and a lack of opportunity. Against this background, however, we foster:

  • respect for local communities and their values and traditions

  • consideration for issues of land access and environmental impacts

  • respect for local communities’ rights to earn a living

  • respect for people and restraint in the use of security personnel
