Kopanang Gold Mine, situated near Orkney along the Northwest and Free State provincial border in South Africa, is a well-established deep-level mining operation with a legacy dating back to 1984. Initially developed under the stewardship of AngloGold Ashanti, the mine has evolved through various ownership structures and is now operated by Kopanang Gold Mining Company (Pty) Ltd.
Today, Kopanang produces in excess of 85,000 ounces of gold per year, making a significant contribution to the regional economy and employment. The operation is being strategically advanced into a sustainable, long-life asset, with a constant production of 2,200 kilograms annually.
Mining activities take place at depths ranging from approximately 1,350 to 2,240 metres below surface, accessed via one of the largest-diameter shafts in South Africa. This extensive infrastructure supports ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and long-term profitability.

Development
Shaft sinking for the mine was initiated in 1977 and completed by 1981.
Production Start
Operations began, primarily targeting the Vaal Reef (VR) at depths exceeding 1,350 metres below surface.
Ownership Shift
AngloGold Ashanti sold the aging asset to Heaven-Sent SA Sunshine Investment Company (related to Village Main Reef) in February 2018, as part of a restructuring of its Vaal River assets. Kopanang Gold Mining Company (Pty) Ltd is now an independent company.
Recent Developments
The mine has sought to boost its empowerment ownership and restructure for a potential restart.
Projects
Various projects are currently progressing to increase Life of Mine (LOM), from the current official seven years to twelve years, with even further extensions possible.
